Zaramagskiye HPPs: Closing of the Ardon River Channel Begins
On 14 January, the Ardon River channel was closed off in Zaramag. Taking part in the ceremony was P.I. Katsalov, Chairman of the North Ossetia Republic Committee on Fuel and Energy; I.Ye. Gorev, Managing Director, head of JSC RusHydro's Southern Division; V.B. Totrov, Managing Director of JSC Zaramagskiye HPPs; A.A. Dolmatov, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Launch Committee; and N.V. Kasatkin, Lengidroproekt Chief Engineer of the Zaramagskiye HPPs Project.
Dumping construction debris on the right bank of the Ardon River (closing off the river channel) is the first stage prior to the flooding of the future reservoir. This was decided on 13 January at a meeting of the Executive Construction Committee, in which some of Russia's leading experts in the field of building hydropower installations took part, and jointly with the republic's government.
"Today we have taken yet another step toward the long-awaited launch of the Main HPP. Closing the Ardon River channel is a major event in the building of the Zaramagsky Hydroscheme. Although the plant has yet to produce any electricity, the Main HPP will still be able to protect the population of the nearby villages from the rising waters this year," Managing Director Gorev said in his speech at the closing-off ceremony.
"Before we started the flooding, we took every measure to ensure the safety of the local residents, and also finished all of the work associated with the local archaeological digs," said First Deputy General Director Vitaly Totrov in his speech.
