The Zhigulevskaya Hydropower Plant has been awarded the title 2008 Leader in Environmental Protection Work in Russia, as part of the 4th National Ecological Conference "New Priorities in National Environmental Policy in the Real Sector of the Economy," devoted to global ecology issues and Russia's role in the world ecosystem. The JSC RusHydro branch Zhigulevskaya HPP won the award for the introduction of ISO 14001 system. Vera Dolgikh, Director of the Zhigulevskaya HPP, was given the medal of honour for Environmental Safety.
The winners of the competition were chosen by the conference's Organizational Committee, composed of representatives of federal ministries, agencies, and services; specialized committees of the RF Federation Council and State Duma; directors and scientists from leading nongovernmental ecology organizations; well-known scholars and ecologists working in the environmental protection field; and deans of the nation's largest specialized higher educational institutions.
The ceremony was held on 18 November in the Kremlin State Palace. Vera Dolgikh presented awards of recognition to the plant's workers in a ceremony held on 21 November.
"This award rightly belongs to the entire team at the Zhigulevskaya HPP. For a year and a half now, we have been doing serious, large-scale work to win our International Certificate of Compliance with ISO 14001. In October 2008, our plant was certified by experts from the SGS Company, the largest international agency for management system certification. The level of the highest environmental standards is now becoming the norm for each worker at the Zhigulevskaya HPP," said Director Dolgikh.
