RusHydro commissions Barsuchkovskaya small hydropower plant

December 22, Moscow, Russia. PJSC RusHydro (ticker symbol: MOEX, LSE: HYDR; OTCQX: RSHYY) announces opening ceremony of 5.25MW Barsuchkovskaya small-scale hydropower plant in Stavropol region. Construction of the facility was completed on November 30 and the power plant received the necessary documentation to begin operations on December 1 2020. Its average annual clean electricity output stands at 24 GWh.

Viktor Khmarin, acting Chairman of the Management Board – General Director of RusHydro, Nikolay Shulginov, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation and Vladimir Vladimirov, governor of the Stavropol region took part in the opening ceremony in the form or videoconference.

Viktor Khmarin commented: “Barsuchkovskaya small HPP is the third facility built under the capacity supply agreement (DPM) for renewables. Earlier in June and November, we have commissioned Verkhnebalkarskaya small-scale hydropower plant in Kabardino-Balkarian Republic and Ust-Dzhegutinskaya small-scale HPP in Karachay-Cherkessia Republic. During next two years, we plan to bring online Krasnogorskaya HPP-1 and HPP-2. In the medium-term we will launch Bashennaya and Psygansu small hydropower plants under DPM for renewables agreement as well.”

Barsuchkovskaya small HPP is located near Nevinnomyssk on the Great Stavropol Canal. In order to create pressure on the turbines, the facility utilizes the dam’s compensation reservoir of Kubanskaya HPP-4 which provides water supply to Nevinnomysskaya GRES. Such engineering solution helps reduce construction costs and improve efficiency of water resources as Barsuchkovskaya small HPP uses water previously discharged from the spillway of the hydroelectric complex. Hydroproject institute has engineered the facility while Hydroremont-VKK and ChirkeyHPPStroi, both part of RusHydro Group, have been responsible for construction of the small HPP.

Barsuchkovskaya smaller HPP is equipped with three 1.75 MW horizontal hydropower units with radial-axial turbines rated at 12.7 meters. The electricity is supplied into the power system via 35 kV power lines.

Vladimir Vladimirov mentioned: “Development of renewable energy sources is under way in Stavropol region. A number of solar and wind power plants have been commissioned already. We are closing the year by bringing online Barsuchkovskaya small hydropower plant. We welcome new partners in development of renewable energy sources in the region and hope they will cooperate with companies already present in the region such as RusHydro, which is actively engaged in modernization of existing hydropower plants which will further improve reliability of electricity supply and efficiency of water resource management.” The head of the region then thanked RusHydro for all the work the company has done.

Barsuchkovskaya HPP is one of seven small-scale hydropower plants constructed by RusHydro in the North Caucasus Federal District as the region provides ideal natural conditions for small-scale hydro development. All facilities (Verkhnebalkarskaya, Ust-Dzhegutinskaya, Barsuchkovskaya, Karasnogorskaya 1 and 2 and planned for construction small HPP Bashennaya and Psygansu) are built with guaranteed return on investment under capacity supply agreements (DPM) for renewables.

Total installed capacity of hydropower plants operating in Stavropol region is 481.8 MW including 10 hydropower plants as well as Kubanskaya PSHPP – the first pumped storage power plant constructed in Russia.
