2,000 TOWERS WERE INSTALLED ON THE SECOND POWER TRANSMISSION LINE PEVEK-BILIBINO

13 february 2024

Builders have already installed 2,000, or 80%, of the towers on the second 110 kV power transmission line Pevek-Bilibino with a length of 496 km, being built by RusHydro in Chukotka. A total of 2,496 towers will be installed. The power line is constructed in extremely harsh environmental and climatic conditions of the Arctic. Over 500 people and 220 pieces of equipment are involved in the work. The construction of the second line and related facilities is expected to be completed by 2025.

Intensive construction and installation work is underway along the entire route of the new power transmission line. As of today, 88% of the tower foundations have been prepared and 170 km of wire have been installed. As part of the 2023 navigation along the Northern Sea Route, the delivery of the remaining cargoes for the project to the port of Pevek has been completed. The 110 kV Yuzhny substation will also be reconstructed and the 110 kV Beta switching point will be built. Currently, foundations for equipment are being constructed at these facilities.

In September last year, RusHydro completed the implementation of the first stage of the project for the construction of two single-circuit 110 kV overhead lines Pevek-Bilibino in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. A high-voltage 110 kV line with a length of 490 kilometers, a new 110 kV distribution point in Bilibino, and a reconstructed 110 kV Komsomolsky substation were put into operation.

The new power transmission line connects the towns of Pevek (the northernmost town of Russia) and Bilibino. The line increases the reliability of power supply from the floating nuclear thermal power plant (FNPP) “Akademik Lomonosov”, located in Pevek, to both Bilibino consumers and mining enterprises, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The new power transmission line will replace the existing OHL on wooden towers built in the 1960s that has reached the ultimate degree of wear.
